Things would be cheaper to buy if credit was not used as the merchant fees alone can hit over 3% and those are passed onto cost of goods sold. Plus to get those perks you pay more again. But that is the financial system. Money (debt) needs to flow.

Banks do not like me. If I cannot afford something I do not buy it. Screw going in debt.
Even if you pay off the card before interest charges, you psychologically spend more if you're not using cash. So regardless the card company is earning money through their transaction fees with the vendor, and you're spending more by having a card instead of limited cash that you're raised to hoard and hold onto.
