We wanted to know how to negotiate debt settlement with creditors and debt collectors, so we asked a lawyer, John Skiba:

0:00 Intro
0:46 Don’t threaten bankruptcy unless you actually mean it
1:28 Give them reasons to accept your debt settlement offer, such as hardship
2:20 Tell them about any other debts you have
2:45 Be prepared for a counteroffer
2:54 Make a fair offer
4:34 Negotiate with the opposing attorney

If you want to settle your debt, making empty bankruptcy threats isn’t the best move. Instead, illustrate your financial hardship and other obligations, such as tax debts or child support, which can affect a creditor’s ability to collect.

Make a realistic offer, and be prepared to receive a counteroffer.

I received a settlement offer at 50% from the law firm representing the creditor. Do they typically take less than this offer. I’m approximately 1month away from our 2nd hearing. They have only given me 1 week to make a decision on this offer but, I only have 42% of the debt in cash. Do they take less?

I have a debt collection that I've been paying for years, but for the past few months, I haven't been able to make payments, and they haven't contacted me? I don't know the exact amount I owe and they haven't provided all the information I have asked for. Should I contact them to make a settlement agreement even though I don't know the exact amount?

@puffnstuff6907 says:

Do not let these people bamboozle you. Check their trust pilot reviews they are notorious for not filing paperwork with the courts and sending their clients into judgment default.

@tomfahrny7574 says:

DO NOT use Solosuit. They sent my file to the wrong court and filed my case on the wrong document causing my case to be rejected. They have no CLUE what they are doing Save your money

Good morning, I was given a summons to appear in court January 16 on a credit card debt with Discover in the amount of$4779.. I agreed to a monthly payment of $273. I can't afford to pay, Discover wouldn't go any lower I am in my 70S and on social security. The question is should I call the attorneys office and ask to lower monthly payments or wait until my summons hearing?

@user-oi7jt5jv6v says:

Dealing with Gurstel law they haven't sent me an email saying how much we settled. Will have them recorded is good enough? They are telling me after I send my payment, they'll send me something. Im nervous since a judgment is pending in a few days. So im jusy playing with days and getting it settle before that time frame.

@richardoa623 says:

Hi I have 3 credit cards that’s were maxed out the creditors closed my accounts due to not making minimum payment my question if I settle for like 50 to 70 percent and agree to pay can they still come back and try to get the rest???

@judithhubbard773 says:

So? Wasn't this supposed to tell you how you can negotiate your own debt? I didn't gain any knowledge about how to approach my creditors on my own.
