France has unveiled a painful 2027 budget aimed at bringing its public finances under control, with the government seeking €54 billion in savings. Public debt has reached around €3.6 trillion — 119% of GDP — while borrowing costs are rising and investors are questioning whether Paris can rein in its deficit.
But Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu faces fierce political resistance. France has no stable parliamentary majority, his two predecessors were brought down over austerity plans, and students are protesting over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating school buildings.
Journalist Chris Bockman joins The Day from Toulouse to examine whether French voters accept the case for spending restraint, where the government can realistically make cuts, whether taxes will have to rise, and what happens if financial markets lose confidence in France.
The confrontation comes just months before France’s 2027 presidential election, with Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon currently leading centrist candidates in recent polling.

France's debt is now around 119% of GDP, but cutting spending is politically explosive when people are already protesting about overstretched public services. So what’s the bigger risk for France: allowing the debt to keep rising, or making the cuts needed to bring it under control?
Too much spending and too few production. What’s the big secret?
The French can simply decide not to pay. France is a western first world country. Who is going to threaten them if they don't pay. They are not weak country like India. They should ask India to pay for it. India is buying weapons from France. France can increase the cost of the items being sold. France should also ask war reparation from India because large parts of India was a colony of France. Then the France lost it. So many people from India come to France. France can tax those Indian immigrants.
Not me????????????
The US continues to rush down the same road. And the GOP’S “One big beautiful Bill” just added $2T more……..

France has hit the crunch.
Shockingly spending money you do not have is a short sighted habit.
Others will.
And the thing is there was no reason. They created the environment where they thought they had to spend so much more money than they had themselves.
Mass migration? Who has been destablising and exploiting countries in Africa for 50 years now? France.
Who opened the flood gates by destabilizing and helping to destroy the stable governments in Syria and Libya? France.
The war in Ukraine? Who supported the overthrowal the democratically elected government in 2014? France did.
I guess when life is good you gotta make the crisises yourself, something to pour money you do not have into in the future!
Cut all the benefits to foreigners, foreign aid, increase retirement age similar to Germany or scandinavia.

So many different perspectives, no party ever has control and the country can't do nothing.
