“Progressives on Thursday decried the Biden administration’s decision to exclude millions of people from its student loan relief plan, a move meant to thwart legal challenges like the lawsuit filed on the same day by six Republican-led states seeking to block President Joe Biden’s proposal to cancel up to $20,000 of federal educational debt per borrower.
Politico reports worries over legal challenges from the student lending industry prompted the U.S. Department of Education to reverse course and no longer allow borrowers with Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFEL) and Perkins loans—which are guaranteed by the federal government but held by private lenders—to participate in the debt cancellation plan.
Biden announced last month that his administration will forgive $10,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers who attended college without Pell Grants and who earn less than $125,000 individually, or $250,000 as a household. Borrowers who received Pell Grants will have $20,000 in federal debt erased.”

My Perkins loan wasn't covered under the COVID forbearance either. I had to pay my quarterly fee throughout.

Because I owe more than 20,000, I consolidated my FFEL loans a little over a month ago because I was applying for TEPSFL. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known that I needed to. After hearing about the change this morning, I lost it and broke down crying. Even though I qualify because I consolidated before 9/29 my heart was broken for everyone else in my situation. And I no longer have faith that any debt will be forgiven. Also, lest anyone forget, the people who have FFEL loans have had them since on or before 2010. In my case, my earliest loan is from 1997. I’m still $37,000 in debt.
Let's not forget that it's not just the Republicans but Joe Biden realizes that he could lose more votes with the middle class especially since the middle class is expected to see an increase about 20% in their taxes come January 2023 when property tax is due, let's not forget he also wants to win over the middle class to win and keep the House of Representatives in the 2022 midterm elections and unfortunately student loan forgiveness package will cause the effect of increasing taxes in order for the US government get that money back.

Every time I read this story today somewhere the number of potential student loan borrowers goes up lol.
This is the same thing as the Filibuster: republicans can just say "we're going to filibuster this bill", and that's it. Imagine in football the defense can just say "we're going to block" and the offense just hands them the ball?!?
They could have just MADE those states and republicans walk into a courtroom and explain why the lower and middle class of this country doesn't need this bill.
