In some parts of the Balkans, families still live by a centuries-old law called “the Canon,” which recognizes the right to vengeance—if a man from one family kills another, the family of the victim must respond in kind. This “debt” is usually executed by the eldest male member of the family. It is his duty to avenge his loved one—if he refuses, he declared a coward and renounced by his family.
VICE Serbia recently traveled from East Montenegro—where some families have experienced four cycles of vengeance—to the north of Albania, where some children never leave their homes in fear of being killed. Along the way they spoke with families of murder victims who, disappointed by the corruption of the official justice system, have taken judgment and punishment into their own hands.

My Great Uncles from the USA who are Albanians did this when a truck driver killed their brother. They believe this gave them bad luck in the future.

This is not in some parts of Balkan, its in very specific parts, at least today – Albania.
The Kanun isnt Balkan, its a specifically Albanian set of traditional laws and moral code that have been in use for centuries.

This is a common practice in Mexico.. more so in the northern states where there is more of a rugged culture.. entire familys of men go extinct over vendetta.
Montenegrians are real Serbs, and vendetta in Balkan is big part of Serbian tradition. It is most popular among Serbian tribes of ,,Brdjani" higlanders and among Albanians that most of them were Serbs that got Albanized. Brdjani and Malisori have same genetics, tradition and customs. Beside Brdjani (Serbian people), Montenegrian (small part as well of Serbian people) have too but less prominent and people from Herzegovina. In Serbia still there is cases but Serbs in Serbia changed a lot under assimilations and different infulences while Serbian people in mountains kept old traditions. ????????

What a stupid way to organise society. No wonder some parts of the Balkans are derisively referred to as the old country. If you are going to take revenge, as least have some honour and standards by limiting it to the one(s) who'd wronged you, not innocent members of their families.
