Analysis by Sky News suggests that one in ten of the UK’s poorest households are getting into debt – just to finance day-to-day life.

Working families are running out of money every month with a lack of affordable housing, combined with high interest loans – often from illegal loan sharks – meaning they are in a permanent struggle to survive.

Sky’s Sally Lockwood has this special report on the latest in our ‘New Lines’ series – examining life in Britain in 2019.

Why are people defending those that get into debt? I live my life daily going without the things i want, as do many others.

Why do people borrow money they cant afford to pay back and then expect others to feel sorry for them?

I think getting into debt just to celebrate Christmas is rather stupid, I don't know why people do it.

L C says:

I agree. The single mums are the worst. They have no skills and no money… They should have thought about that before chasing the bad boy who ghosted.

I'm sorry but Michaela I don't believe. Says she is in council tax debt after having unpaid maternity pay and that she doesn't answer the door in case it's the bailiffs. Then proceeds to answer the door to a delivery and claims 'she didn't order anything'. Looks to me as if she's in trouble because she's ordering too much online? I could be wrong but that's how it looks..

I was in care and when i was 18 i was given my own place and left to be. I was paid UC once a month around £500 pound and had no help with anything and now im 19 im in 3000 pound arrears and make less then £5 a hour and in college 3 days a week…
Any advice?

Angel B says:

Disgraceful for the 5th richest country in the world. The rich get richer and poor get poorer.

IMG says:

The problem is Universal Credit, and austerity, lowering of benefits for those in need.

Also loan sharks, why cant the government give benefit loans. The guy in the video borrowed £1k payed back £60K, what happened to Gov regulations.

Dont blame the wrong people.

timothy finn says:

imagine if everyone refused to repay their debt.
